City’s First-Ever Large-Scale Historic Site Survey in Boyle Heights

Results of one of the largest, most ambitious surveys in the nation to be announced Saturday by Councilmember Huizar, Los Angeles Conservancy and the Boyle Heights Historical Society

A historic walking tour and results of the Survey L.A. pilot project, one of the largest historical surveys ever conducted in the nation, will be presented Saturday morning in Boyle Heights, one of the city’s oldest suburbs and the pilot community for the new citywide historic identification project.

Saturday’s presentation will identify two potential Historic Districts and 33 individual buildings as potentially historic and will include a walking tour of five sites on Boyle Avenue, including the “Max Factor home.” The house represents a microcosm of Boyle Heights diverse history, having seen homeowners of Jewish, Japanese and Latino descent through the years.

Previously, only 15 percent of Los Angeles has been historically surveyed before the launch of Survey L.A. Attendees will be able to participate directly in the survey through MyHistoricLA, suggesting places in Boyle Heights that are important to them.
